South Nation Conservation Supports Community Environmental Projects Through Grant Program

If you’re still looking to complete a community environmental project, outdoor recreational event or fall tree planting, it’s not too late and South Nation Conservation (SNC) is here to help!

SNC is still accepting applications for its popular Community Environmental Grants Program, which has awarded over $50,000 to community groups, non-profit organizations, and member municipalities since 2015. The Program has traditionally supported community events across the Conservation Authority’s Eastern Ontario watershed jurisdiction that promote recreational use of our rivers, protect the environment, or celebrate natural heritage.

“We’re proud to support projects that the whole community can both learn and benefit from while protecting our local environment,” said John Mesman, SNC’s Community Lands and Outreach Lead.

SNC amended the Program’s guidelines due to the ongoing Pandemic which now includes up to $300 in funding for community environmental stewardship initiatives such as tree and shrub plantings and creating or updating community gardens.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled to help our community partners enhance public greenspaces during the Pandemic. Trees add infinite value to urban areas and community spaces, and people continue to visit municipal parks and Conservation Areas in record numbers, demonstrating the need for investments in these natural spaces.” added Mesman.

Since amending the Program in 2020, SNC has now helped add trees to public parks in each of SNC’s 16 member municipalities, including areas in the City of Ottawa, Prescott-Russell, Stormont, Dundas, and Glengarry and Leeds and Grenville.

On October 21 and 22, 2021, SNC staff supported the Township of Russell by planting trees in seven of the municipality's public parks thanks in part to the Community Environmental Grants Program.

Know a public space or local park that could benefit from some more trees? The last date to receive applications through this program is November 10, 2021.
