FLOOD WATCH

04-Apr-2025 04-Apr-2025

SNC advises that a Flood Watch Statement is being extended in anticipation of additional snowmelt and rainfall in the upcoming week.

Weather Forecast: Environment Canada is forecasting approximately 35 mm of rainfall over the next week, with up to 20 mm forecasted on Saturday, and the potential for an additional 15 mm of rainfall by next Friday. Daytime temperatures will likely
melt remaining snow adding additional runoff to
local systems.

Environmental Conditions: The melting of snow and ice in combination with the forecasted rain beginning on Saturday can result in increased water levels and flows in local streams and rivers. Widespread flooding is not anticipated, however, fast flowing water and flooding of low-lying areas, floodplains, and areas with poor drainage is still possible. Low-lying areas are those that are regularly flooded during the spring freshet period. Water levels are expected to remain elevated through the week due to additional rainfall anticipated.

Risks: Rivers and streams across the jurisdiction may experience increases in water levels and flows and embankments may become unstable. Minor flooding is possible in low-lying areas and areas with poor drainage.

ACTION: Residents are advised to exercise extreme caution when near rivers and waterbodies due to increasing river flows and slippery conditions. Any ice-covered bodies of water are considered unsafe. Parents are encouraged to explain these dangers to their children.

Residents in flood prone or low-lying areas, historically susceptible to flooding, should take the necessary precautions to protect their property. Please ensure:

  • Sump pump is clear, in good working condition and has a backwater valve on it.
  • Easy access to portable backup generator and pump.
  • Downspouts are clear and the outlet is at least 3 m from the dwelling.
  • Driveway culverts are clear of debris and drain well.
  • Securing items that might float away as flows increase.

Duration: This flood watch statement is in effect until April 11th, 2025 at 5 PM or until an update has
been issued.

SNC monitors the water levels and weather forecasts as part of the Flood Forecasting and Warning Program. Updates are provided as conditions change.
