SNC Hosts TD Tree Days Community Planting Event in North Dundas

Thanks to the support of TD Tree Days, volunteers stepped into nature on Sunday, September 15th to help South Nation Conservation (SNC) plant 200 trees and shrubs along the South Nation River, in the Township of North Dundas.

This tree planting forms part of a larger restoration project at the Oak Valley Pioneer Park where significant erosion and bank slumping along the river prompted the need for remediation.

Since the start of 2024, SNC has re-sloped the shoreline, repurposed removed trees, and planted native trees, shrubs, and grasses to help naturalize the riverbank. Over 2,000 live willow stakes were also planted along the shoreline to help stabilize the site with a network of roots.
Project support was provided by the Oak Valley Pioneer Park Volunteers with funding from government, industry, and local partners.

“Bringing the community together to help plant trees during TD Tree Days is an annual highlight,” said Michelle Cavanagh, SNC’s Special Projects Lead. “Planting these native species helps stabilize the shoreline and will provide important habitat for a variety of fish and wildlife along the river.”

Every year, SNC adds thousands of trees to the local landscape by working with its partner municipalities, landowners, and community partners. This year, SNC has coordinated the planting of over 170,000 trees and has planted over 4 million trees since 1990.

The TD Tree Days initiative aims to help restore green spaces within their North American footprint through working with Municipalities, Conservation Authorities, and First Nations.

“A big thank you goes out to the TD staff and our community volunteers for coming out to help get these trees and shrubs in the ground,” added Cavanagh. “We have already started to see new habitats developing from the conservation work completed earlier this year at Oak Valley and we look forward to the community being able to experience a restored and protected South Nation River shoreline.”
