GEOCACHERS WILL CLEAN UP AT SNCITO5 IN RUSSELL
April 15, 2014 – Geocachers of Eastern Ontario and South Nation Conservation (SNC) are inviting members of the general public to join forces with local and area geocachers on Saturday, April 26th, for a major clean-up in Russell and surrounding areas.
This is the fifth year the South Nation Cache In/Trash Out (SNCITO5) has been hosted within SNC’s 4,200 km2 jurisdiction. The event starts at 8:00 am with a hardy, outdoor, breakfast catered at the W.E. Burton Conservation Area in Russell. Registration deadline is April 22th, participants can email Tjackson@nation.on.ca to sign up. The event is expected to draw some 95 participants from across Eastern Ontario.
“While SNCITO5 is designed primarily for experienced geocachers, it’s a great opportunity for beginners to pick up some of the basics,” said Tim Jackson, SNC Geographic Information Systems Technician. “It also provides the added bonus of helping to improvement the environment.”
Participants will cleanup approximately ten sites in the vicinity of Russell, Metcalfe, and Embrun. Past events have seen everything from rolls of fencing to a washing machine being recovered during cleanups. Ian Mitchell, an experienced geocacher and veteran SNCITO participant, noted that the most memorable item was probably an old Volkswagen beetle pulled from a slope leading down to the River.
The basic idea of geocaching, Mitchell explained, is to locate containers hidden outdoors, examine the contents, and share the discoveries online. The game is enjoyed by all age groups and builds a strong sense of community and support for the environment; he noted that thousands of geocaches have been established across Eastern Ontario.
Many new geocaches will be published on www.Geocaching.com for SNCITO5 participants to find.
