Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers play an important role in helping South Nation Conservation protect and enhance natural spaces across Eastern Ontario. Every year, we work with individuals, schools, community groups, service clubs, municipalities, and local partners to support a wide range of environmental stewardship initiatives.

From community cleanups and pollinator gardens to tree planting, habitat restoration, conservation area management, and environmental education projects, volunteers help make our programs possible and strengthen connections between people and the environment.

SNC also provides supplies, technical support, and funding assistance for community-led environmental projects through our Community Environmental Grants Program.

Whether you are looking to volunteer individually, as part of a school program, or through a community organization, there are many ways to get involved.

Volunteer Programs:

Forest Stewards Program

Volunteer Forest Stewards are assigned to SNC forest properties to help support their long-term care and stewardship. Volunteers assist by visiting properties annually, reporting concerns or maintenance issues, monitoring site conditions, and supporting land management activities.

Stream Watch

Assist with monitoring local streams and waterways by helping collect environmental data related to water quality, aquatic habitat conditions, and overall watershed health.

Rain Gauge Network

Volunteer weather observers help track rainfall amounts across the watershed using rain gauges installed on private properties. Collected data supports flood forecasting, watershed monitoring, and water management programs.

Stewardship Projects

Participate in community stewardship events and environmental projects throughout the year, including shoreline naturalization, pollinator gardens, tree planting, habitat restoration, educational events, and community clean-up initiatives.

Conservation Area Management

Support the maintenance and enhancement of SNC Conservation Areas by assisting with trail upkeep, signage installation, litter cleanups, habitat projects, and visitor experience improvements. Many of our parks and conservation areas have been supported through community fundraising, volunteer leadership, and local partnerships, including Oak Valley Pioneer Park and McIntosh Memorial Park.
